Accommodations in America

In a BuzzFeed article titled “Non-Americans Are Sharing The Things They Actually Like About America,” one foreigner answered the question, “what are the positives of America that you see?” with the following response:

How accommodating many places are to disabled people, especially for people in wheelchairs. There are often ramps and large disabled parking spaces, not to mention that there is an entire amusement park for people in wheelchairs in San Antonio!

This insightful comment shows just how impactful the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) can be.

About the ADA

The Americans with Disabilities Act was established in 1990 and prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all aspects of public life. It is divided into 5 titles that relate to different areas of public life, including jobs, education, transportation, and public and private spaces.

Several government agencies enforce the ADA, but one of the most effective tools for keeping institutions accountable is civil litigation.
